One of the most common movie genres that stretches from as far back as the silent films is Comedy. Comedic movies are designed to amuse and entertain through humorous exaggeration of situations, actions and human characteristics. In essence, they are intended to make you laugh!

Some movie watchers say that Comedy movies portray situations that don’t correspond with anything real and generally ‘just aren’t serious enough’. But who said serious is best?

Not only for the purpose of having a good time and rejoicing in the misfortunes of the characters on screen, Comedy movies are one of the best ways to laugh.

Research shows that laughter relieves stress and muscle tension, strengthens the immune system and reduces the risk of heart attack. Even respiratory problems, high blood pressure, viruses, tumors and other illnesses can be relieved with laughter.

According to some articles, studies have shown that patients that have a clown present prior to surgery had less anxiety. This reduces the risk of complications.

A Dr. Norman Cousins wrote a book about how he recovered from a life-threatening tissue disease by watching Comedy movies. “Laughter is an antidote to apprehension and panic,” wrote Dr. Cousins.

During Christmas time, everyone is stressed about just about everything. How much the tree cost, how many presents they still have to get, dealing with family relations, last minute party details and why the dog keeps chewing the tinsel. On top of that the flu always seems to go around, your back aches from cleaning, you haven’t slept in 3 days and it’s nowhere near over.

When all is said and done, take the time to watch a Comedy movie. Reduce your stress and strengthen your immune system. Laugh at the ridiculous behavior of some people and the magnified scenarios of day to day life.

Christmas is a time of laughter and merriment with friends and family. For those celebrating at home and even those who are just taking a quick breather before going back to work, celebrate the Christmas season or end of year with a surge of laughter in order to begin 2008 with a smile on your face and a positive attitude.

Four score and seven years ago, our forefathers…

In addition to ending slavery in the United States, the Civil War lead to huge advances in technology and communications.

Today, people watch Civil War programs on Interactive TV when ever they want to - free from network programming schedules. If Dick Tracy was around today, he’d have a cell phone with Interactive TV so he could watch news of himself every time he
solved a crime. Here’s a few thoughts on how Interactive TV will broaden children’s television experience.

Interactive TV for Kids - A Window on the WorldSure kids watch animated movies, sports, music videos, etc. just like their parents watched on network TV. Kids today know what a search engine is and how to use it. For them, interactive TV is child’s play. Young people interested in science, history, art, cars, etc. watch interactive TV programs and educate themselves like no generation before them.

Future of Interactive TV - How High the Moon?
The future of interactive TV is so bright, a person wonder’s why it didn’t exist fifty years ago. In case any one emembers,

it was some fifty years ago the Russians sent up the “Sputnik” satellite and kicked off the space race. Interactive TV is just one of the many products that grew out of improved telecommunications of the cold war.

How Does Interactive TV Work - Interactive TV Guide
You turn on your TV set or cell phone and search for a program you’d like to watch.. I mean does anybody really care how interactive TV works? Of course not. Consumers care about how much Interactive TV costs, program availability, service and brand name. - Interactive TV providers spend lots of $$$ promoting their brand names to children.

Cell Phone CellCasts - Interactive TV Guide
Cell Phone CellCasts have turned adults into kids and kids into, well… how will kids growing up with interactive TV turn
out? It’s a good bet they will receive a much broader education due to program diversity and low cost.

As a kid growing up, I read Dick Tracy comics with his wrist watch walkie talkie and never believed for a second I would own
one and could watch TV on it. What will they think of Next? What ever it is, you’ll see it first on Interactive TV!

The phrase “calorie restriction diet” is a bit of a tough sell. It’s not the most appealing name because restriction doesn’t sound fun.

But I see that celebrities are doing calorie restriction. Kym Douglas, the author of the Black Book of Hollywood Secrets says, “The biggest secret I learned from celebrities is that they don’t do “diet food”. They eat the real thing, just not a lot of it.

“I remember sitting down to breakfast with Elizabeth Hurley and being shocked that she was having real bacon with her eggs, not turkey or tofu bacon. And she said: “I’m just going to have a salad for lunch and a little dinner, so it’s fine. But I’m not going to have fake bacon.”

Now, I don’t tend to turn to celebrities for inspiration and I hate the size zero mentality that is so ingrained in Hollywood. I do think that calorie restriction is the most effective way to lose weight, however. So for fun I’m going to list some of the items in the A to Z list of Hollywood’s hottest diet tips:

A FOR ASPARAGUS: Celebrities live on this because it’s a natural diuretic and gets rid of bloating.

B FOR BRUSH YOUR TEETH: A nutritionist advised her famous young client that the best way to maintain her mere 15 per cent body fat was to use a toothbrush after every meal. And a craze was begun. Using a toothbrush signals to your brain that you are full.

…and BENEFIBER: Sprinkle it on your salad or in your coffee because it helps move food through you system more quickly.

C FOR COOKIE: Celebrities such as singer Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson follow the Cookie Diet. In other words, they “eat a cookie, skip a meal.” They eat a healthy dinner of several hundred calories and eat only calories or biscuits at other meal times. They lose weight because it’s based on calorie restriction.

… and CINNAMON: Celebrities sprinkle it in their tea because it supposedly can lower cholesterol and blood sugar.

E FOR EPSOM SALTS: The salts draw fluids out of your body. Heidi Klum and other stars use these before filming and photo shoots.

I FOR ICE LOLLIES: Oprah Winfrey likes iced fruit bars because they take a long time to eat and also satisfy her sweet tooth.

L FOR LICORICE: Eat a piece of licorice or a strong breath mint when you’re hungry. It numbs the taste buds.

M FOR MATCHA GREEN TEA: One cup cup of matcha green tea is the equivalent of 8-10 cups of regular green tea. This boosts the metabolism and is an appetite suppressant.

P FOR PRUNES: Hollywood nutritionists suggest including four chopped-up prunes with the ground beef when you cook a hamburger. It reduces the fat by 40 percent and the prunes are tasteless so you won’t notice that they are there.

Q FOR QUICK SUGAR FIX: One Los Angeles bun shop is particularly popular with Hollywood celebrities. Many of them order a tiny paper cup filled with icing instead of a big cinnamon roll. That way they satisfy their sweet tooth without eating the calories.

S FOR SUSHI: Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie love sushi. This seaweed is loaded with vitamins, has few calories and can lower cholesterol.

V FOR VEGANISM: Alicia Silverstone says that going vegan is the key to lasting weight loss: “I swear it’s so easy. You don’t have to have a diet mentality at all if you eat healthy, plant-based foods.”

W FOR WEDGE SHOES: According to Hollywood stylists the footwear that makes you look the thinnest. Cameron Diaz, Jessica Simpson and Gwen Stefani all wear wedges for that reason. Stylists love them for cover shoots as it makes the featured actress look taller and slimmer.

That’s only a partial list but you get the idea. These are tips that even real people like you and me can use. I’m making a mental note to try the icing tip sometime. I think I’ll pass on the wedges, however.

Many times we get caught up in writing for a specific group, whether it be for search engines, linkbait, or subscribers. This can lead to several problems down the road.

Writing for…

Search engines - Writing for search engines is using SEO techniques within the title and finding keywords you will easily rank for.

Linkbait - Writing for linkbait is writing articles which you believe has a chance at getting picked up in social media or baiting other blogs to link back.

Subscribers - Writing for subscribers is when you publish articles specifically for your subscribers. This can be answering questions, following up posts, year in review posts, or link posts highlighting other websites.

How to get around this by alternation.

Writing linkbait everyday is a sure-fire way of annoying subscribers, and writing an SEO based article has its own limitations. The problem isn’t necessarily the writing, but a basic SEO rule. Classic SEO tells us to have only the keywords within the title, since any additional words take away weight. Obviously, for blogs this is a problem. Having an article titled ‘Love Quotes’ isn’t nearly as enticing for subscribers or linkbait as ‘Top 100 Love Quotes from St. Peter’.

Writing specifically for subscribers also has its faults. Gaining new readers can become difficult by catering only to those already subscribed.

Go around the hump
The easiest way to get around this is by combining as many as possible. When answering a readers question, stretch it out into an entire article. While you are at it, go ahead and sprinkle some SEO in the title. Why not turn it into linkbait too?

What?!?

Although classic SEO doesn’t cater to linkbait, it is best to do so. The positives of writing a linkbait article with keywords far outweigh the negatives.

As for catering to subscribers, it doesn’t always have to be writing articles directly at them. Write something new and exciting. Show something they haven’t read or seen elsewhere. Tell them about the latest, newest news with your own spin. Don’t just regurgitate articles other blogs threw up last November.

Of course, this doesn’t mean all articles must be this way. Mix it up! One day, linkbait, next day, SEO, next, subscribers.

In short, combine your strategies and diversify. It’s like the old saying, don’t put all your eggs in the same basket.

Respect is the proper way of showing the real essence of coexistence. It is recognizing your fellowmen’s differences to your own way of life without any prejudice or bias.

No man is an island. Everyone is a member of this world. Wherever you are, you are as important as everyone else. Whether you are rich or poor, all must show respect to each other as a basic tenet of any religion.

There shouldn’t be any discrimination on whether what one believes in. Respect is more than a word. It is part of life process that must be understood in all aspects.

Whether Muslim or Christian, we need to respect each other’s faith or we will just be debating on issues that would eventually lead to greater conflicts. World peace can be diversely defined by having a wider acceptance of the true meaning of “unity in diversity.”

In times of hardships and difficulties, it doesn’t really matter what your religion is. What matters most is your willingness to give a helping hand to your brethren and help them survive the daily struggles and let them feel their worth as a human being. Kindness should not only be head knowledge or only found in values book, but rather it must be seen in actuality.

Certainly, the world is too big to explore. Every nation has its own customs and traditions. We can never impose on someone what to believe in. But we can respect each other’s ways and work together for the common good.

The golden rule prevails in all religions, “Do unto others what you would like others do unto to you.” Real Christians, Muslims and other inter-faiths adhere to that. Doing good to others without asking anything in return can do no harm.

If only all nations will work for the promotion of world peace rather than wasting lives by violent acts of war, then the generations to come will have a less stressful and worry-free dwelling place. Communication lines must be free from biases and reservations. If one ear is tainted with color, then communicating is treated as nonsense.

All efforts among nations have an impact to the greater whole and to the future of the inhabitants of the world 20 years from now.

It is never too late to rekindle ties and understand each other’s beliefs. We need respect to be understood and recognize every nation’s beliefs.

If everyone is gearing towards world peace — respect, truth and justice — can never go wrong and compromise can be a least priority.

Everything starts from respect, although this is a word that world leaders need to fully understand by heart.

(This article was a reaction to the December 25 Brunei Times’ editorial titled, “Respect, not compromise.”)
